Digging box - I misundertood the "game"

I built a digging box as an experiment a while ago, using cardboard
filled with "Perlite" (Horticultural potting medium). That fell apart and
made a right mess. So, did a proper one using a plastic tank with a small
opening in the lid (you know, those things we take our rats to the V*t
in). The first time, we ended up with a bedroom full of Perlite, so I
figured this would prevent it happening again (most of the lid stays in
place).

Little did I know that I misunderstood the game played by "Chips". The
game is not to burrow into the box. The game is to scoop out as much
Perlite as possible, and then throw it out of the cage. She's very very
good at it.

Oh yes, they love making a mess, that's the best part!  Maybe they love the
sound of the hoover :o)

Funny you should mention them loving the  Vacuum cleaner..... Weird as it
may sound... but my guys go running from the top of their house all the way
to the ground level so they can play chase with the vacuum cleaner as I lux
back and forth under their house...LOL.  I would have thought they would be
terrified of it... but nope..... funny  wee critters...:))

Ya'know, Kate mentioned it as well, but I my boys come running when the
vacuum hose comes out.  You'd think it looks like a snake and they'd be
hiding.  But no, they are right there.  I have to put a special crevice
cleaner on the Shop Vac so I don't accidentally suck one up!

But I've also noticed the girls scatter.  So maybe the boys are defending
themselves against this loud snake with a voracious appetite.
