Baytril

Hi I wonder if somebody can give me some advice. I have a rat that isn't too
well, we aren't sure what it is. The only signs that something is wrong, is
that he's loosing weight. I've taken him to the vets and have been given
Baytril. The only problem is, he won't take it out of the Syringe, and its
almost impossible to get him to eat anything apart from things like porridge
(rolled oats), or weetabix, basically things with dairy in them. Is that ok
to give it too him, and does Baytril loose its effects if put in  milk?

Hi John, is your rattie old? They lose weight as they get really old.
Try putting the baytril in Cool Whip, they'll most like love it. I'm sure
it's ok to be the Baytril in dairy products.
The only thing about milk, I've read some rats may be intolerant to it and
cause them to have severe cramping.

Hi Joanne,

I live in the UK, can I ask what is Cool Whipp?

I have only put less than half a teaspoon in the mix. I'll try to find
something different to put in from now on. Its been really hard, as he wont
take much else.

He is one of the two boys I had rescued at 6 weeks old. The ones in the
pictures I put up not ;long ago They are barely 5 months old. Both myself
and the vet are puzzled by this. The only thing he's still got is some
slight Porphyrin, no other signs. His chest is clear, he's not sneezing.
Just gone off his food. His brother is doing ok, I think at the moment
anyway.

It was strange, I got them weighed about 3 weeks ago, and one was 300g (this
ones loosing weight) and the other was 315g. (sorry, not sure what that is
in Ounces) Got him weighed again, and he's not down to 285g, that's 15g in
three weeks. Really odd. His stools are ok, his fur looks ok, too. In the
back of my mind, I'm thinking there may be a tumour somewhere. I hope not.

Thanks for your help, I'll keep you posted.

He's losing weight fast and he's too young to be losing weight. I would buy
Nutrical or something like that, whatever it may be called in UK, just
checked and you have what's called Ferretvite, high protein nutrition for
sick animals. This should help.
Does he play, is he active still? Does his cagemate allow him to go eat?
Cool Whip is like a whipped cream, do you have Dream Whip? You can also use
yogurt. My guys really like the blueberry yogurt.

Is it like Angel Delight?

Ah I know what Angel Delight is. I will try to get some Yoghurt.

He does play, and still loves to come out and play with me too. They do
squabble, but its only for a couple of seconds, and that's it. Its like he
just wants to sleep. I have never seen anything like this, even though I've
only had them a couple of months, even my hamsters have never had anything
like this happen.

Now a stupid question, but is the Ferretvite something you get from the
vet's or from a shop? Never heard of that before. Will keep a look out for
it though.

I second that.  Ferretvite is especially designed to help 'em put more
weight on fast, and has vitamins etc too.  Angel delight, er, won't :-)
(but anything's better than nothing).  Ferretvite comes in what looks like
an absolutely HUGE toothpast tube, and costs (I think) £7-8 ish, but
because it's so concentrated it should last ages.  Jolleys pet stores sell
it if there's one near you, but any large pet shop should have it.  It's
designed for ferrets so a shop selling them should be a good bet.  Failing
that I guess it'll be getting the yellow pages out and looking there!

One last thing, if you do track it down when you first feed it to the rat
squidge a bit onto its nose - Ferretite doesn't seem to smell like food,
but once they've tasted it they LOVE it!

Good luck with the little critter.

Hey, thanks Mark and Joanne, I really appreciate that.

For nose read mouth.  I'm not sure rat would appreciate a loads of
ferretvite jammed into its nostrils.

An edible oil product that simulates whipped cream.

When I was looking after two rats, one of them would lick Baytril
from the syringe.  For the other one, I put the Baytril on a little piece
of bread.  The rat ate up the bread, no problem.  I also tried
Kellogg's Rice Krispies.  That also worked.

I was told by my vet to mix the Baytril in with their drinking water,
40 units per 100ml. The furry fellas seemed to spend more time at
bottle than they did before I added the Baytril

Baytril is ok to use with dairy products.  The other month I had one of my
boys on baytril-doxy combo - doxycycline should not be mixed with dairy
products, so I made some porridge up with just water and rattie liked it
just as much as when made with milk.  It was a real winner, I've never had a
rat turn it down.

Other foods they seem to eat when they don't have much of an appetite is
mashed potato, scrambled eggs, soya yoghurts, baby foods and soups.

Hope your little one is well again soon.

I think things are progressing ok here,  he no allows me to give him his
medicine into his mouth, and its so much easier than trying to find
something to tempt him with. He does seem to be getting better, the weight
has stopped dropping off him, and he is moving around a lot more too. I'm
still concerned though, as he doesn't seem himself.

I'll keep you posted though, and let you know if anything else happens.

It's certainly a lot easier if they will take their medicine like that.
Glad to hear he is doing better. It'll probably take a few more days until
he's back to normal.  Sending the little guy well wishes to help him on his
way to recovery :o)

With our ratties, we mix the Baytril with neat Crusha: the liquid you
use to make milkshakes. No milk, just baytril mixed with the Crusha. I
mix it up in an egg cup and then dip my finger in. They then lick it
off my finger.... willingly! Strawberry seems to be their favourite
flavour ;-)

I tried mixing anti-biotics with Strawberry Crusha a while back and the rats
didn't like it!  Picky little devils aren't they?!
