I'm one of those people that waits for the right name to come along,
whether the animal tells me or one just fits.

After 2 weeks my self bought Mother's Day gift has a name!  I was getting
the boys for some out time  and said, 'Come 'er Quixter and....  (wishing I
knew his name)... let's go play.'  He sat up, put his front feet in my palm,
and I heard (in my mind) " Albert".   All I could do is laugh and say, 'OK,
Albert it is.'  Now Quixter is on the desk and Albert is on my shoulder,
patiently waiting for me to finish this post and play with them.

I love it when you can "read" your rats like that. I can do that with mine
too.
Albert is a good strong name for the little gift package. ;)

Lovely!
I've had animals for 30 years and most often, they will suggest names to me.
Some, just a few, take forever and some never do this. But usually they are
the ones who almost don't need a name - not that I'd leave one un-named, but
in some ways it doesn't matter (to them perhaps?).

Often it happens fast and subconsciously. Occasionally I can think of the
right name *before* I get a particular animal, as when I am awaiting its
collection. It works sometimes, but often the name doesn't fit when I meet
it, in which case something just as good usually springs to mind! But it
keeps me happy while waiting to try and think of something.

I had a lovely rat given to me last weekend, courtesy of a breeder
friend.... an ethereal ghostly whitish silvery blue colour ticked with
silver and with black eyes (she is thought to be a Russian Silver Pearl).
She has enormous personality, fast and clever and always out of the cage
looking for fun, but has she thought of a name for herself??? In a whole
week, no. Perhaps she doesn't have time! I have gone through names such as
Ghost; pale coloured whitish-blue flowers like Harebell, Orchid; Starlight
(corny but sometimes they do corny); Winter; Stardust; Mithril; Arwen and
many others, but none fit. Suggestions...?

In contrast, I am acquiring a stunning Thrianta rabbit in a few weeks to add
to my small - but interesting - bunny collection. These are a rare breed,
and the MOST bright fire-orange-red colour you've ever seen. They also have
fit-to-bust personalities, are very clever, love people, and are not a
little bit mental! So what else could he be but Danté? I haven't met him
yet... maybe he'll prefer to be John! *grin*

Crystal?  Lilith?  Coral?  Sidhe?  (Or an
easier-to-spell-and-pronounce variant like Shay.)  Minx?  Penelope?

I'd like to hear the vet calling those first two names out in the waiting
room!

I can just imagine me trying to say them after a few beers, would come out
as words unsuitable for children's ears...
