We found that our two were a bit nervous to start with, but now they love
it. They swim up and down and have splash about. But I think they like the
rub down wit the towel after more......

Just remember not to make it to hot or cold !or deep ! We give our toys and
things to stand on...

Hope that helps

All my rats have hated, loathed, despised it!!  They cry like they are being
tortured and get so scared they wee and poop all over and my arms and hands
are ripped to shreds as they try and climb out.  Hence I only bath them when
absolutely necessary!

Mine too.  She likes the towel bit afterwards which is important - she'd
hate me if it wasn't for all the attention she gets afterwards.  In
answer Borg I only bath mine when she smells.  I'm hoping she'll
eventually make the link between widdling in her bed and getting a bath
but I don't hold out much hope.

A friend did catch Rat repeatedly dipping her stomach in the waterbowl.
I presume it felt nice/tickled a bit so there isn't any particular
aversion to water, and they can all swim.  I guess making bathtime fun
for them, then only washing them when they've learnt to enjoy it might
work.  Try assimilating one (or whatever you Borg do) to find out what
makes 'em tick then go on from there.

All my rats have tremendously hated bathing. Even small amounts of
water (1 cm) on the floor of a plastic cage was enough to make them
want to flee. After bathing they allways sent me glares that seemed to
say to me that "we will not forget the evil you have done".

I wonder if the water aversion is a trait that is mainly caused by
genetic factors that differ between rats.

Does anybody know of good ways to train rats to like water, even if
they have "water phobia genes" from their parents?

Absolutely gorgeous food on the bottom of the bath (and somewhere dry to
eat it)?

I know those glares only too well!!!  The way they fall out with you and
absolutely refuse to give you any attention for at least a couple of hours
after you have done the dreaded deed!  "How could you do that to us, I
thought you loved us.... what did we ever do to you...."!

I think maybe rats are not quite as scared in the bath if they are not
alone - safety in numbers and all that.  Although I've even tried that one -
putting three in at once, and they still hated it.  Maybe if they are
introduced to water at a young age they wouldn't be as frightened.  Oh, and
making sure they have a platform in the bath to escape to if they choose
would help.

My girls loath the bath, but my boys are in their element.  I don't do it
regularly, just when they are stinky enough to need it (or in the boy's case
when they have got too much buck grease).

well that was fun, i filled the bath with a little luke warm water and
places a platform at the shallow end for them to stand on, they just
stood there and looked around then decided to take the plunge and play
who can run up the plug chain the best.

All seemed well I only left them in there for about 2 mins and
splashed them a bit to get them wet. I'm not sure about the bubble
bath though , he he only joking, they seemed ok and when I got them
out they sat on my lap in a towel and let me dry them then they tried
to play lets get everywhere we can and hide :) but they do come when
called

So it was back in the cage and big chunks of fresh mellon for them as
a treat.

They even smell nice now :)
