Hi all,

Thanks for all your kind words and helpful hints. Unfortunately,  there has
been so sign of our rat for a week now. It's as though she has disappeared
off the face of the Earth -- nothing has been nibbled or chewed, and there
are no signs of droppings.

She was partially sighted, and we now fear she has had some sort of
accident.

I'm so sorry Derek... she may turn up though, rats are very resilient. There
was this couple that lost their rat outside, almost a month later they found
her living under the porch... so you just never know.

Oh noooooo!!!!! I am so sorry.

But don't - please - give up hope. Rats are incredibly tough.

There's a story on my webpage, in the "About" section, titled The Story of
Henna & Laura, about two tiny baby rats from my first litter 20+ years ago,
who escaped into my outside rattery aged only 3-4 weeks. In brief, they not
only survived but were recaptured a year later in superb condition and took
only a little time to become tame again.

She had probably found a haven somewhere and is so caught up in learning to
cope on her own, that she might have forgotten how to return.

Best wishes for her, wherever she is... and you might yet have an unexpected
surprise.

You haven't got a piano have you? Three of my girls escaped a couple of
years ago after the door of their cage wasn't shut properly. We found all 3
were inside the piano and we could not get then out. It was an old piano and
they had made a hole through the material at the back. It was days before we
were able to get them out and that was only by dismantling the piano. It was
really weird to hear the piano making tunes on its own.It was like a
labrinth in there, and the treasures we found inside including my watch.
Needless to say most of the keys inside had been chewed, they'd had a rare
old time. I actually felt sorry for them when they were returned to their
cage and their adventure was over. We ended up having a bonfire with the
piano in question. I can laugh about it now. One of the guilty party,
Matilda is an old lady now and the only surviving one of the trio. Luckily
the piano wasn't in good working order so it was no great loss and my
critters were more important anyway. So, if you have a piano check it
out.All the best,
Rosalind.

Now THAT is a fantasic story, and one which I could not leave to go to bed
(at gone 2am) without a comment!

Thanks Rosalind...

I will never again hear an out-of-tune cockney-mockney Queen Vic type
piano.....
[Americans, read out-of-tune stereotyped seedy bar honky-tonk]
.....without thinking there might be rats inside bouncing up and down on the
keys and levers, laughing and widdling in glee... á la Terry Pratchett and
his tap-dancing hat-wearing ratty character Sardines, in "Maurice and His
Amazing Educated Rodents".

I'll probably dream about it tonight.

PS: I have a female rat called Sardines...because she would tap-dance if I
could afford the lessons and the shoes. I have met another female rat also
called Sardines, who also would and could. Did Terry get the gender
wrong...?

All my boys - even the camp ones -  can't even touch their toes, never mind
tap dance. In fact, they'd have trouble just putting the hat on.

What a brilliant story!  Some of the antics our little fuzzies get up to
make great reading don't they? Lol

Don't lose faith.  Rats tend to chew on things when and where they feel
safe and content.  Meaning that they usually chew things in dark or out
of the way areas. Just because you haven't found anything chewed doesn't
mean she isn't busy some place devouring what she thinks is a good meal.
Any rat owner can tell you that they have discovered things long after
the fact that have been chewed to pieces.
I think it is time for the proverbial gloves to come off in this
fight.  Yes, thats right....it's time to order a pizza!  (Always worked
for my little lost ones)

LOL!  Sounds good.  And be willing to leave some out for awhile and
even rewarm it.  Or maybe some fried chicken or fish or something
equally "aromatic."  Gotta try to appeal to the main sense, for sure.
(It still amazes me sometimes when I realize how much our guys are
going by smell when I observe how they do something and realize how
much they actually cannot "see" compared to us bipedal types.)

More great advice! Thanks everyone for giving us hope. I guess we should be
a bit more patient.

Regarding treats -- we have left grapes and cheese out in every room (both
are favourites of hers), but perhaps we should try something more aromatic.
Time to start cooking chicken!

More things to keep in mind- if your house is hot, then she is probably
keeping cool by laying low in the day and coming out at night.  If your
house has AC and is cool, she is probably laying low until the noise
dies down before coming out.  Remember, by nature, they are nocturnal
and stealthy.  Try making the house as quiet as possible and sitting
very quietly in each room.  If you really want to get the food aroma out
put it in front of a fan. ;)

Funnily enough, my ratties always go mad for food when I'm cooking with
garlic - they seem to love the smell.  It's certainly one of the more
aromatic foods!  Fish is a good one too, nothing quite as stinky as fish
cooking.

Good luck with finding her.

I once had a hamster that scrabbled up an open chimney that was not in
use as our family had recently got central heating. My Dad dismantled
part of the inside of the chimney and got little Birthday out (thus
named because he was my present for 10th birthday!). My pet was fine
although the chimney was not the same after and he got a builder to
block it up. Looking back now it might have been better if the builder
had kept the chimney and then we could have had the occasional open
fire in winter. However I am babbling because it is a Bank Holiday
Weekend in the UK and I have got more babbling time:-)

To get to the point I hope things are OK with you

Ah, we're also now having a public holiday weekend here on the other
side of the big pond -- Memorial Day weekend ... one of several
holidays of the year that I think have really partly (or mainly) just
turned into an excuse for a kind of bacchanalian release, actually.

While that kind of occasional sanctioned reveling may be necessary
to our overall mental and emotional health as a society, I'd just like
to remind everyone to please be careful out there on the roads, what
with all the drinking.

Derek, I don't know whether anybody has already mentioned this or not, but I
came across a great tip today.  Put some treats out for your lost rat and
surround them with a circle of flour... when rattie comes to get the treats,
she will tread in the flour and then you can follow the little paw prints
back to her hideout.

As you know rats love nothing better than a good old gnaw, have you had a
look around for signs of where little teeth might have been? Good luck with
your continued search,
All the best,
Rosalind.
