A friend of mine who also has a 29 gallon FOWLR has been running
skimmerless (yuck) do to space/efficency/cost concerns. The other day I
say a CPR BakPak (not BakPak 2 old school?) used for $60.

To make a long story short, he set it up, watched it for 2 hours and
went to sleep. When he woke up the tank was a third emptied onto the
floor. Hmmm.

In addition he also tells me that if he sets the air intake correctly
(nice white chamber full of tiny bubbles) them so many bubbles escape
back into the tank that he can't even see his rock. He has never used
any skimmer before and this is his first tank. It has been running for
about 6 months. I will go over there with him and look at it to see if
I can figure something out but any advice from someone who has
experience with this skimmer would be great.

Because it makes things difficult to understand.

I used the CPR bakpak.  How did his tank drain water?  Where was the water
coming out?  Even if the cup gets too full, it simply sends skimmate down the
main hole in the collection cup and stops skimming.

Does it have the bio-bale in it?  That should help break up the bubbles.  I even
had  small sponge on that output tray to help trap bubbles.

Since he's never skimmed his tank, it will be a mess of bubbles for a while.  At
least part of a day.   After a while, it will clear up.  The skimmer will need
time to slime over as well.  Then the only time he should see bubbles is when he
feeds, adds new water or handles things in the tank.  All of those affect water
tension, and bubbles will come out into the display.  They are annoying, but it
won't be billions of them.
