I am in the proccess of constructing a canopy for my 75gal reef so I can add my MH bulbs. Due to a mis calculation, my lights are going to be 8 to 9 inches from the surface of the water. The bulbs are 400watt Blueline 10000k + and I will be running two of them. I know I should be more like 10 to 12 inches from the water but is 8 to 9 going to be okay or should I start over with my canopy? TIA ~Mort Sounds too close to me unless you can keep the water cool. If you were going to mount the lights via the chains or wires that most have then shorten them, if you had ideas of screwing them to the hood then you might want to rethink the hood. My bulbs are 9" off the water, and I have fans I installed in the canopy to cool the hot air in there. They blow straight down onto the water, forcing cool air into the canopy and push the hot air out the back (and front, when open). Unless you need the spread to light the hole tank, why would you want to mount the lights so high off of the water. The amount of light decreases with the square of the distance from the bulb. Champion lighting wants $349.95 for their 1/5 HP chiller, and that is a special sale. Purchase a cooler [I believed it a soda or wine cooler], drill or DIY a hole through this cooler. The tube is a PVC [I believed it a 1"] that draw water from a SCWD. The cooler is set to cold. This setup are set with a Sump + Cooler + SCWD. In the sump have a heater to regulate the temperature to his preset degree. The cooler is a Sanyo that was purchase in Fry's Electronic for about $99USD. The cooler have multi-purpose. 1. cool the tank water. 2. cool is beverage. Tank - Sump - SCWD > [PVC pip] > Cooler > [PVC pipe] > SCWD - Sump - Tank. What are the heat losses on the PVC pipe? Does it make any sense to do it? I doubt it. I do not remember the capacity of that cooler or the exact model. I just know or believe it Sanyo [by memory]. The only thing I can best describe is it a small cooler or personal cooler that you put your soda / beverage / wine in. PVC pipe heat lost or how much it bring down the temperature I trully do not know. I just see this setup by accident when I went with a friend. The heater regulate the temperature to preset temperature as I was told. He did not mention what was the temp that need to be lower but his current temp that I was there, was set to 79`F [IIRC]. BTW, he have 3 heater in his sump that I forgot to mention. 1 heater was on when I was there. CapFusion,... Cost is relative I guess.... This might be cheap to setup, but I would think the energy costs would be much higher than a normal chiller, especially if one has to use a heater because the cooler is too effective. BTW... Replace the word "cooler" with "cube refrigerator" or "dorm-sized refrigerator" and I've seen this done too. That was my point. $200 is too low for a 1/5 HP chiller, unless it's used or there's something wrong with it.
