Hey guys,

I've had my 100G tank running for about 6 months now.  All was good
except my nitrate battle, which is now at about 10ppm.

Lately though, I've been getting quite a bit of brown algae.  I've
been battling it for about 2 weeks.  It starts to show up on my sand
bed as "brown blotch's".  I've read that high nitrates promotes algae
as well high silica.  I've even read that high phosphates will also do
it.  But I don't think any of my levels are high.  I've topped off
every 2 days with RO/DI water, but, still that pesky brown algae keeps
coming.

Any thoughts?  System stats below.

Rio HyperFlow 20 for return
Mag 9.5 for Evolution 500
UV sterilizer
Amiracle MaxiReef 200 w/d
4" sand bed
Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Test kit
Orbit PowerCompact Lighting 2 x 10k, 2 x 6.7k.  On 6hrs in the morning
and 6hrs in the evening.

Is it brown Alge or red Slime?  If its red slime  I just went through this.
I just cured it this weekend:
Live Roc produces a red slime  ( i cant remember its name)  go to your local
store and talk to them  they game me a  product called  CHEMI- CLEAN  it 2
applications and a partial water change, now my tank is CLEAN  if they dont
have it  tell them u have Live rock  and u need something to cure the slime
..

Alea can be cleaned by turbo snails but the red slime.... just keeps coming
back

From What IM told Brown algea in the Begining stages of a tank is natural.
What you have to look for is if the Algea is a red slime. I cant remember
what its called, but lIve rock can produce a red slime which can look like
algea. I had the same problem with my tank. I went to the local Fish store
and talk to one of thier techs He game me a procduct called  CHEM-CLEAN ( im
sure there are other brands on the market) in 2 applications, the tank was
clean as a whistle. I had to do a partial change after the second treatment
but the sand is clean.
Good Luck
