Just got a 75 gal tank. I am looking to set it up after X-mas. My first
question is how many pounds of sand would I need to have a bed of 3 or 4
inches? Second questions what type of sand should I get?

I used sugar fine white marine sand in the tank because of its beautiful
look and in the sump i used a 5 inch base of aragonite which keeps the
calcium up to 500-600 ppm, rock solid so to speak.  aragonite sand is good,
but if you have a sump, then you can put it there and use the good looking
stuff for the tank.  one other thing to consider, is aragonite offers
different sized particles, which some creatures use one size and other
creatures benefit from other size i believe.  the sugar fine worked great
however as the only sand in the tank other than a few cups of live sand i
seeded the tank with, i watched tube worms build with it, etc..

not sure on how many bags you will need.  i think somewhere in the range of
100-150 lbs would be about right in the 75gal.

I put 3 40lb bags in my 75g. I would suggest just a bit more, perhaps
150lbs. I had intended to buy a couple pounds here and there from
various LFS, but have only added about 5lbs since taking me to around
125lbs. The depth of my sand bed varies, around 2.5 - 3in in places,
up to 4 - 5in in others...

Use the Reef Central calculator for that.
