It is cheaper and it should be cheaper because it is not the same thing.
This is NOT live rock and will not add bio-diversity to your reef tank.
Assuming you will have enough live rock in the tank to seed it with life
this should be good. Also, consider the rock you want to add will have
a lot of dried up, dead tissue on the surface and inside the pores...
This will create ammonia so if your tank is already established and
you have some delicate animals inside I would cure this rock in some
other container to not polute your tank with wastes.

It makes great base rock. When stacking rock you want to put the base rock on
the glass, not on the sand otherwise you will get an avelanch when critters
start diging under the rock. So put the base rock on the glass with the sand
around it. Since this will smother live rock, the reef bones work great for
this, and then put good live rock on top.

I received 40# from them a few months ago and was very pleased.. I got some
large pieces and some mediums...and very little rubble.  The worms and
Coraline, etc have covered quite a bit already.

Has anyone used CaribSea - reef bones?  I currently have a 100gal tank and
would like to add more rock and this seems cheaper than adding live rock -
any ideas?

I got a 40 lb. box for base rock in a new FOWLR I am doing- and I was
extremely pleased with it. I got good large pieces with very interesting
shapes- not a basketball sized lump to be seen, and next to no rubble.

I just used it in a new tank I'm setting up- did half Reef Bones and half
aquacultured.
If I had it to do over again I would use 90% Reef Bones- the shapes are
*very* interesting and I loved them. Big triangular shelf pieces and next to
no rubble. It hasn't colored al the way up yet, but the tank is only six
weeks old.
