I'm trying to decide on a pump for my ca reactor, between a mag 5 or a
gen x-2400

any suggestions?

I haven't worked with the genx, but I would not suggest a mag5 for the
reactor.  In an external version the mag drive pumps seem to leak/seep
water.  The pump  I would suggest is an ehiem, but they are much more
expensive.  I have heard good things so far about the New quit-one pumps
also.
