I have a 55 gal. FOWLR, and am looking at building a sump from a 10 gal.
tank I have. This is about as big as will fit under the stand I have. I
plan on using a Mag 7 for a return pump, which at 4' of head is 480 gph.
I would like to have a small refugium built into this, but would this be
too much current? Maybe just live rock in the sump?
Thanks,
Mark
That amount of current would work fine. You can partition off the middle
section of your sump with baffles to create an area where you can keep your
refugium

I partitioned off a ten gallon to use as a sump last year. One end
has a baffle for the drain. It's about 4-5" from the end and a couple
inches short of the top frame. The middle of the tank has a DSB, and
several hermit crabs that are too nasty to be trusted in the display
tank. The other end of the sump has a bubble trap, with the three
sheets of acrylic placed just far enough from the end to allow a Mag9
to be placed in the space for the return. The amount of current
created by the Mag doesn't seem to bother the hermits, nor the macro
growing in the fuge.

This sounds like what I'm planning. I have some panes of window glass cut
to fit so that the water enters on one end, goes through a baffle to the
middle/refugium, then over another partition into a section for the
return pump.
Thanks,

Mark, I would like to see a pic of this when complete. I want to do the
same, but have limited knowledge of how to design it.

Certainly. I just went around to various websites like melevsreef.com and
looked at the pics of other people's setups. This will be a fairly simple
one, but it's cheap. I'll be sure to get a couple pics.
