Mark, you tank looks awesome. You alone at www.melevsreef.com got me into the hobby a year ago, and have no inspired me to go from a 48G to a 48G + sump/refugem to a 150G + 50G refugem now. Thanks for that. The one thing I couldn't find on your site was what kind of sand/coral you use in your tanks. I have been researching this for days on the www and reefcentral and am as confused as ever. Just tell me what I should use, where I can get it online, and how much I need for a DSB on a 60x24x24. You have not let me down yet! Thanks, you are the best! BigHaig Well, there are choices of course. Your safest choice is the Araga-Live sand at the LFS. That stuff is rinsed out well, contains some beneficial bacteria and doesn't cloud the tank when set up for the first time. Lots of guys like to use Southdown / Old Castle tropical playsand, which is aragonite-based. It does cloud the tank. My 55g, I used beach sand that a LFS sold me by the bucket for $10. It took 4 buckets to make a 4" DSB in my 55g. In the 280g, I have all aragonite sand, which came from area reef tanks that were recently taken down. I have a feeling it was from the LFS, not the stuff from Home Depot (on the East Coast). It will be ~300Lbs of sand giving me a 4" DSB. 1) Is the sand good? 2) is 4" enough for a DSB? 5 x CaribSea Aragamax Sugar-Sized Sand 30 lb (CaribSea Aragamax Oolitic Select Reef Sand) 5 x CaribSea Aragamax Oolitic Select Sand 30 lb (CaribSea Aragamax Grand Bahama Reef Sand) Thanks for the feedback! Yes, 4" deep is just fine. You can go as much as 6" if you so desire, but 4" is sufficient. I used sugar-sized myself. Oolitic is super fine, and I don't think you have to go that route personally. Buddy and I looked for any of the three for close to a year and stumbled upon a old store that had 30 bags of it. Needless to say we bought it all and supplied all my reef buddies with it while it lasted. I kept 4 bags in reserve for any future upgrades in tank size :) > It is hard to tell. My gut says no. The bags we used in our systems were loaded with coral chips, shells and all the other nice ocean remnants.
