Mollies are not really freshwater... they are brackish water fish.
From the all brackish water fish they are the cheapest, so here is
the reason for popularity...
I am sure many typical brackish water fish can be adopted to full
strenght saltwater environment, but why would you like to do it?
They are used to take big salinity fluctuations but living long time
in fresh or fully saltwater most definitelly shortes their lifespan.

Thats bullshit..............where is the proof it shortens their
lifespan? I have figure eight puffers i nsaltwater for  years now
doing just fine as well as mollies........Get a clue Pszemol or give
proof other than speculaiton. Afterall your always looking for bona
fide proof so why would we or anyone else expect any different from
you.

Where abouts in the world do you live Paul?
There really are a lot of fish that can handle different amounts of time in
salt/fresh water.
Your best bet is to go fishing in the tidal area of a river and see what you
catch.
Check the laws and size regs, and bring a battery powered air pump to
transport.
Stuff like Scats, target fish, mono, bream, flathead, gars  can all be kept
with a small amount of salt or full salt.
I use enuf to be able to use skimmers.
I like skimmers

The green spotted leopard and the figure eight puffers can be adapted
to full salt water without a problem. I have one that is over a year
in 1.026 SG water....a nice big fat green spotted leopard
puffer........I take em up  from FW  and 0 salt content by .02
increments daily until I hit what I want for my SG target (1.026) Fish
looks totally different in SW than it ever did n FW and does much
better overall....
