Do you have a fair amount of live rock, and the tank was set up in the last
12-18 months? Sounds like you have some kind of nocturnal ambush predator
as a hitch-hiker on your LR... maybe a mantis shrimp, or something similar.
Try hanging out with a flashlight after lights out, and see if you can
confirm it. There are traps for all kinds of nasties, if you can get a
positive ID.

I had the same problem when my tank was new, I though there was a black hole
in my tank where at night my fish would disappear. not even a sign of the
caucus. Eventually it stopped but I never did find out what it was. But I
agree with atomwaever about the night preditor this is a very real
possibility

I'd tie a piece of shrimp to a rock and put it on the bottom. If
something is in there, it's likely to be more interested in showing itself.

bahahahaaaaaaaaaaa night ambush predator. Jeze thats what Peter Pan
the peter eater does when he ambushes guys so lick their peckers
does.Learned it from Wayne and his little bosom buddy Kurt the
c.nt.......................The problem is its Gill Passman is sneaking
in there and stealing yuor fish you dumbasses. She has a passion for
dead stinking nasty fish............and she loves to feed them to her
lesbo buddy TYNK the chick with a dick..........who also smells like a
dead fish.........
You might have something in that that you don't know
about, but you might have something in there that
you didn't know would hurt your fish.
What all do you have in there that you know about?

The one thing that concerns me is that about a year and a bit ago, I
found a small black crab in the tank that must have hitch hiked on
some rock. At the time he was about the size of a quarter. I saw him
the other day and he was at least 2 inches with 1 inch claws, and the
guy is real fast.
If he is the culprit, how do I go about getting rid of him....

Put a short glass in the tank with a dead shrimp in
the bottom of the glass, and place it next to the
rock so that it can easily climb in, but not climb out.
