How are fluorescent light tubes measured:-
1) to the ends of the tubes, excluding the electrical pins
2) including the electrical pins
3) including fitted end caps

Can someone please clarify?
Thanks
Gary

Thanks.

I am making my own DIY hood for a small tank. Now I know how much
clearance I need to allow for.

I see. Allow for tube, plus enough room to put caps on pins, + a bit for
luck :)

The tank is a Clear-Seal one and measures only 16" x 8 x 8. Clear-Seal
do manufacture metal hoods for tanks of this size, but as they are not
normally stocked by retailers they work out prohibitevly expensive as
they are subject to special orders from wholesalers. By the time the
wholesalers and then retailers have added on their markup, the hoods
can cost double their original price.

So I have managed to construct a lamp holder out of some steel piping,
cut in half.

As the tank is so shallow, I think that T8 is sufficient and T5 may be
too bright.

I was originally going to opt for an Arcadia Original Tropical
15" (14w) T8 fluorescent tube. However, following your advice, I may
now opt for a 12" (8W) T8 tube.

As far as I can see after Googling, your tank should have had a hood
supplied, for an inc. price of £37.95

I assume that an Arcadia original tropical 12" (8W) T8 fluorescent
tube can be used with a starter rated for a 18" (15W) tube, that is,
high-rating started can be used for a lower-rating tube (but not the
reverse, which would strain the starter or not work at all)?

My guess...........and that's all it is.............is no. What you're
talking about is a combined choke/started unit, not just a starter. I reckon
sommat would go fizz bang!
