Hi,

my guppies have started to rub their sides on the gravel in a very quick
"flicking" motion. This is a new thing, but more than half are doing this,
males and females.

What is wrong ?

Would suggest you treat for whitespot straight away.
Keep an eye on fish for next 4/5 days after treatment to make sure it does
not come back.

I wouldn't unless you actually see spots. It could be gill
irritation from all kinds of other sources.

What is the water quality like?

It looks clear enough, and I change 20% every 10 days or so.......

Ok.

Please would you get a water test kit, and see what the ammonia
and nitrite levels are? Also knowing pH would help. I appreciate
that you keep up with your water changes, so the pH should be
similar to your tap water, and I guess you can see if your filter
has got a problem, so your ammonia and nitrite SHOULD be ok, but
it's worth checking.

You see, the causes of many problems is water quality - when fish
are weakened they are more susceptible to infection or infestation
from things that don't normally bother them, so it's worth checking.
If there's any water quality issues, then address them first.
Otherwise - are there any other symptoms? Are the gills red inside?
Are there any obvious spots or sores? Hunt more clues ;-)

Best,
