A question about rocks in the aquarium

Hello,
This is maybe a bit of a newbie question, but I have a tank set up with a
few rocks in it, the rocks coming from my garden (scrubbed clean, rinsed,
and sterilised in a hot oven - couldnt think of any better way to do it!). I
have noticed a couple of fish have just keeled over and died. Now I have
checked the usual water parameters and nothing untoward there, pH, temp,
nitrate/ites etc. And these fish dont seem to be bothering each other. Also,
I have not noticed any obvious other signs of ill being (white spot, fungus
etc), or odd behaviour. So my feeling is that maybe the rocks are doing
something to the fish (which, btw, are a group of various Malawi cichlids)
which they dont like. I am not a trained geologist, but the stones do not
appear to have any metalic ores running through, they all seem to be of the
igneous/metamorphic variety (no porous sedimentaries).

Can anyone give me a hint as to what might be happening?

Thanks in advance,
Adam Savage

It's not a good idea to use rocks that you don't know what they are.
OTOH most rocks are pretty harmless.  The major reason for not using
unknown rock is that it might harden the water - this is unlikely to be a
problem with Rift Cichlids.  If they are local to rocks, then indicating
where you are might give an indication of what they could be.

Ok, thanks for that. I live in Perth, so a lot of the rocks are glacial
debris, i.e. could be from anywhere. But they do look mostly like
gritstone/gneiss/general rocky rocks!

Cheers so far.

Well Gritstone should be OK as should Gneiss be if there is no
mineralisation.  It is a bit harder to be certain with General Rocky Rocks
:-)

Heh heh, thanks! Thing is, I cant ID the other rocks, and they just look
like, well, rocks! Without any obvious mineralisation, and without being
very porous. Sort of a smooth greyish rocky colour. Definitely not
granite/slate though..... Either way, the problem seems to have solved
itself as all the little fishies appear to be living in harmony now....Well
as much harmony as a few cichlids can manage!
