In February my cat was diagnosed with hyper-thyroid. Because it was
the best choice for us, I went with radium treatments. In March he got
his shot, spent four days at the vets, and came home. By June he was
his old self, had regained his weight, and came through the thyroid
test with flying colors. At the same time he was growing fur on the
inside of his ear flaps. It started on the outer rim, and is now half
way across. Long, silky fur. In the last few days it has begun to grow
on the inner rim and is longer each day. The back of his leg (top) is
filling out, and now he looks like he has bloomers. His chest is much
bigger and it's all hair. I could go on but you get the idea. I have
called his vet,and the people who did the radiation treatment, and
they don't have a clue. Do any of you out there have any ideas? He's
still my baby, but he's no longer the same cat he used to be.

Interesting. Never heard of that side effect before.

Just to be sure I follow -- was it literally radium, or just radiation.
The usual therapy given as a shot is iodine-131. Radium tends to be used
as little surgically implanted beads, that eventually need to be removed.

That would sound like something affecting androgens (male sex hormones).
It's more complex in humans with male pattern baldness, but, in general,
higher androgen levels mean more hair.

Is he neutered?  Are there any behavior changes that might suggest
increased sex hormones?

Only a guess. If it's of concern, you might discuss getting blood
androgen levels, and, if they are excessive and he is altered, there are
antiandrogen drugs that can be given orally.

>yes Howard, it was radiation. He is neutered, but I see no changes
that would suggest increased sex hormones. I will menstion this to our
vet. Thank you.

My guess still is that it has to do w/ the thyroid hormones.

I just Googled "hyperthyroidism hair growth" & came up w/ some hits.  I
didn't peruse the results, but it appears that the thyroid hormones may have
some affect on hair loss/growth.
