Diarrhea in two dogs

My eldest dog (11) developed extreme gas followed the next day with
diarrhea. She would do her thing outside but when she comes back in she
continues to leak poo. By that I mean it smears on the floor (wet poop)
which kinda cleans it off her anus area, but then if you look... more starts
to come out. I held back food for 24 hrs and gave her some Pepto Bismal. The
next day I fed her just rice..sm amounts throughout the day.

Yesterday which was the third day of all this she seem to stop leaking but
still had very soft poop. My other dog developed diarrhea yesterday as well
and had it all through the overnight and this morning. He went all day with
nothing but now he has started getting the runs again. He is not leaking
like the other dog.

Like I mentioned above my eldest dog seemed to be improving yesterday..but
now tonight she has extreme gas again, and is really leaking. Both dogs are
happy and hungry..no lethargy or vomiting. We are on the four day now and
I'm wondering if it's time to take at least the eldest dog in? I've never
seen anything like this before lasting more than a day..and of course the
leaking. Both are house dogs that never get into garbage etc..The only thing
is I bought a new bag of their usual food last Sat. (Innova) The date on it
is ok..but I wonder if the food is spoiled?? Or is their a bug going around
affecting dogs lately that I should know about?

sounds like an intestinal parasite.  my dogs have had several each.  i'd
bring the dogs, and poop samples (yes it's gross, i double bag with a zip
loc) into your vet to test.  dogs can get lots of nasty bugs from drinking
dirty water, so if your dogs are drinking from puddles or outside water
dishes, that may be where this is coming from.

but whatever it is, definitely go to the vet with some poop!  :-)

I second everything Kelly wrote.  One addition - depending upon
the vet, you may have to ask specifically for a Giardia test
because that specific test kit sometimes isn't on hand.

that may be a regional thing.  around here, it's so common that it's the
first thing my vet tests for.  probably because i live in farm country, and
a lot of the popular dog swimming areas are rivers that run through the
farms.

If you ask the vet for something to pick up poop sample, they'll give it
to you.  I have a spare one or two rattling around somewhere just in
case I need to drop off a fresh poop sample at the vet.  Thankfully,
Khan's easy - he always poops if I take him anywhere with lots of dog
smells, like at the vet.

I just use cleaned pill bottles.

That's what it looks like.  Except the cap has a long tube thing
attached to it, and the poop is picked up in that.  The whole thing is
sterile, and there is no need to touch the poop, a major plus in my book.

Use a vinyl or latex exam glove (a lot of people have them now at home for
one reason or another. If not, you can buy them by the singles at hardware
stores).

Pick up the fecal material, then while still holding it in the fingers, turn
the glove inside out as though you are taking off the glove. Secure the
glove shut with a twisty.
