I hope someone on the forum may help with an issue I have just noticed
with my Bombay cat.

I took his collar off prior to giving him a bath and I noticed that he
has lost all fur on his neck where his collar was. The skin is not
red, itchy or scabby in any way so is this just due just to the collar
rubbing the area and/or pulling the hair our? Will the hair grow back
if the collar is left off permanently (the cat is microchipped)?

many thanks in advance

I imagine that it will.

Is this a flea collar? If not, it could be a localized derm reaction to the
materials in the collar. Change collars. If it's a flea collar, the only
good place for it is the vacuum cleaner bag.

I've seen many, many cats with permanent hair loss under the collar.
Some of these guys were wearing regular pet-store type cat collars, not
flea collars.  My suspicion is that it's a mild allergic reaction to
something in the collar and the hair follicles are damaged.  None of
these cats I mentioned were itchy or bothered by the collar.  All you
can do, Italo, is remove the collar and see what happens.  You may want
to try to find a natural fiber safety collar so that your kitty has some ID.

Sometimes the hair will regrow, sometimes not.  My family's old cat had that
happen.  She wore her collar constantly (outdoor cat, leather collar).  We
never took it off, so I can't say that we'd ever noticed when the hair was
gone.  She got lost for a few days, and came back dirty and with the collar
torn, so we took it off.  Totally bald underneath, and the inside of the
collar completely covered with her hair!  :-)  The hair never regrew, and we
had to find a softer collar so that it wouldn't irritate her neck, since we
couldn't transplant the "hair coating" from her old collar ;-).  Never
bothered her  though.  In her case, I think it was just a mechanical thing
that caused the hair loss.  Could've been an allergy issue though I guess.

Any particular material better than others? It seems that neither a leather
or a synthetic collar is any good, so would a softer, cloth type collar be
any better? BTW thanks everyone for all their input.
