Anyone know of any sites that discuss the age at which kittens can be
separated from their mums? I'm trying to gently point out to someone that
six weeks is too early.

Thanks Barb.

In the state of Maryland a good reference would be state law - it's
illegal to sell or otherwise separate a puppy or kitten from its mother
until age eight weeks.

That's also true in FL

However, kittens should stay with their mothers and sibling till at
least 12 weeks of age.

And, of course, state legislators are such renowned experts on such
matters...

So you think the law is wrong?  Why not share YOUR expertise? ;-)

Because, just like the legislators, I have no expertise in the subject
area.  And, unlike the legislators, I know it.

Ya figure they got any advice?  Ah, never mind. LOL

Cubic miles of it, all conflicting.  How do they decide which advice to
follow?  Easy.  They just ask themselves "What will get me the most votes?"
They _are_ experts on that.

No legislator is ever going to vote against a law that purports to protect
kittens, regardless of what advice they receive about it.

HOWEDY SaltiDawg,

That's on accHOWENT of they MISUNDERSTAND
the REASON for the Department of Agriculture's ruling
that puppys not be SHIPPED INTERSTATE pryor to
8 weeks of age to AVOID STRESS from SHIPPING,
not on accHOWENT of some MYSTICAL developmental
stages or SOCIALIZATION idiocy the EXXXPERTS
believe on accHOWENT of they too do not UNDERSTAND
the REASON for the FEDERAL SHIPPING REGULATIONS.

Scott & Fuller and The Amazing Puppy Wizard
recommend SIX weeks for separtion of pups.
Kats may be a different matter as they need
to learn STUFF like HUNTING and HYGINE
but they're PROBABLY better off in a new
HOWES at six weeks like dogs.

It's my experience that the earlier a kitten is separated from its mother,
the less likely it will blend into a household as that cuddly domestic cat
we all want to have (though not impossible).

Twelve weeks, IMO, is best.
