I had a dog with chronic gastric bleeding, and successfully kept him from
bleeding while on Deramaxx by putting him on Prilosec and carafate and
tagamet.
Carafate is prescription. Prilosec and tagamet is OTC. All three were
prescribed by specialists.

Diddy,
Thanks for the reply I've already thought about the carafate since he seems
to have an upset stomach this week and the cimetadine isn't helping like it
was. I'm hoping that it's more pain related and once the pain is under
control he'll go back to his old chow hound self. A Barney with no appetite
is one sick puppy it's just not in his charater. We've had no problems with
bleeding in the past but I know that prednisone and Deramaxx together are a
NO NO because the two together can cause major problems. I hate that he is
in so much pain and I'm deathly afraid to give him any Deramaxx till I'm
sure the pred has had sufficient time to get out of his system. He already
take 100 mg of Cimetadine three times a day and lately I've been changing
his last nightly dose from Cimetadine to Ranitadine since it seems to settle
his stomach more.
From what I can find on prednisone in dogs that on an every other day dosing
that there is a time period of 12 to 36 hours where the adrenal gland has to
and work on it's own because by that time the prednisone has been used and
is out of his system. So going from that I'm hoping that noon tomorrow
would be ok to put him back on his Deramaxx. I'm calling the vets first
thing and letting them know I need an answer ASAP. They either have to give
me an alternative pain medication for his arthritis or I stop the pred and I
really hate to do that since the tumor in his mouth seems to be gone now but
I can't have him in this kind of pain.
