Today my vet gave my dog a free sample of a pill that kills
fleas in 30 minutes. True to fact, there were dying fleas
on the towel covering the car seat when we got home.
What is this stuff?!! I don't recall exactly what he told me,
but I think he said it had something to do with Sentricon.
Does anyone know how this stuff works? I'd also like to know
how long it works. In other words, does it just kill just the
fleas that were on her at that time, or will it continue to
kill any that jump on her now that we're back home?
Thanks in advance.

Most likely it was capstar -- active ingredient nitenpyram. I don't know of
any other oral pill that works so quickly. Basically it kills adult
fleas -- start working with 20-30 minutes, gone within 24 hours. Here's the
official website: http://www.capstar.novartis.us/dog/en/label.shtml
It'll probably kill any fleas that jump on her within the next 6 hours or
so, maybe a bit longer, but it definitely doesn't last more than 24 hours.
It hyperactivates the fleas, so quite often dogs and cats go crazy
scratching as the fleas are dying! It's a great product, especially for
convincing owner that, yes, Fluffy does have fleas! Give a capstar, put the
pet in a cage on a white towel, watch the towel turn black ;-).

Sentinel and Capstar are made by the same company (Novartis). That may
have been the link. Sentinel does not kill adult fleas, it causes fleas
to lay eggs that cannot hatch, breaking the infestation lifecycle.
Capstar, as mentioned by other posters, kills adult fleas very quickly.
The two can be used together as a flea eradication/control program, but
it's the Capstar that kills the adult fleas.

Advantage is great for fleas. My poor labrador was allergic to flea bites
and would mutilate herself... she was on Prednisone 20mg daily and getting
flea dipped every 2 weeks (not to mention Vetalog shots when it was really
really bad) until Advantage came out. After Advantage no more flea
problems. We lived next to an alfalfa field and our cat would go play and
bring fleas homes.... even on walks, because of all the fields, there were
tons of fleas.
I order Advantage online but Petco, Petsmart carry it... so does your vet.
