How to Protect Rabbits Nest?

I have a rabbit nest on my front lawn here in the NE USA. I almost clipped
all the young with my mower. They seem about 4 or 5 inches long, I can cup
them with my hand. I tried to cover the hole with an upside down flower pot
while mowing, but one escaped under it, and the other three started banging
at it until I let them free. When they escaped and/or were freed, the
lounged out in the high grass waiting to be mowed over. I picked them up and
put all of them back in the nest. I was surprised that each and every one of
the four that ran allowed me to pick them up and move them back into the
nest without any fear or resistance. They all were almost memorized.

Is there a device that will protect the young while I mow from freeing
themselves from the nest? I thought the best thing might be to get something
like a square crab net open on one side and force it into the ground around
and over the hole temporarily while I mow. Will this work? Will they dig
there way under it.

Could you not just refrain from mowing for a couple of weeks.....

No, this would be worse, as the rabbits like high brush from overgrown grass
to hide in and I'd be sure not to see them while mowing.

No I mean just don't mow at all until the babies are big enough to get out
of the way while you are mowing...
