You should see some improvement in your cat's physical condition in 2-3
weeks.  By then, the weight should be increasing and the appetite should
be less ravenous.  It will take months for the cardiac changes to
reverse, if at all.  I typically check my patient's thyroid levels and
chemistries 3-4 weeks after starting Tapazole (methimazole).

Hope this brief bit of info helps.

Thanx Sandy, one more question.  The Vet recommended that the best
treatment is the "radio active iodine", about $1100.00, but I was
reading if your cat has kidney problems, it might not be the best
option.  I'm not sure if my cat has kidney problems.  They did blood
work and a urinalyses test.  I would assume the urine test would
determine whether or not there is a kidney problem?  I'll ask my Vet in
3 weeks about that, but would like to know now if kidney problems would
show up in one of the tests.....thanx in advance..

.......actually a combo of the two.  If the BUN and Creatinine are high and
the urine is not concentrated, then you've got kidney problems.

The chem screen and urinalysis should be suggestive of any "kidney
problems".  I'm really a big fan of the iodine treatments.  The deal with
tapazole is that if it's not at an appropriate blood level, even for an hour
or two, your cat is hyperthyroid.  So, if the tapazole is at therapeutic
levels except for those last few hours between doses, your cat is
hyperthyroid for a few hours a day, which is not so good.  Additionally,
cats can be a real bastard to pill, and they tend to get worse about it if
you're doing it a couple times a day chronically.  It can really change your
relationship with your cat.  The iodine treatment is usually a few days of
hospitalization and a few days of not allowing them to sleep on you, and
then nothing else.  Expensive, but IMO worth it if you can afford it.
