My sister has just taken in a stray (we call him orangy) that had his first known rabies shot 2 to 3 weeks ago. She also has a lifelong pet cat named amus that had some of his normal expected shots at that time as well. The nurse that handles my sisters cats told my sister over the phone that her cat(s) need their booster shot(s) in a few days or else the rabies shot will not take. Is this true? My understanding is that the first rabies booster shot is administered 1 year after the first rabies shot. Any explanations? My vet gives the second rabies ( booster ?) shot 1 year after the first shot for our kittens and strays. After that, it's every 3 years, which is legal in our area. I really think the veterinary clinic my sister uses is pulling the wool over our eyes - I will talk to her about changing vets and see about other sources of information about the correctness of what my sister's nurse is. The kitten shot series are administered a certain time period apart, but rabies isn't given more than once a year. And one other thing. Just because she's talking to someone on the phone who works in a vet clinic, that doesn't mean they've had any formal education. It varies state to state in the US. A vet tech who is certified has had education. Many states do not require this.
