Dog Can't Stand Up in Morning

HI There -

Zasha is an 11 Y/O German Shepherd. Two weeks ago, she ate an ENTIRE
CHICKEN CARCASS out of the garbage on a Thursday. Being temporarily
very financially challenged, I couldn't take her to the vet, but fed
her full of oatmeal, bread, metamucil and olive oil (and beef broth).
(Thank you usenet.)

I also kept her pretty immobile. No long walks or running. She had one
terrible day on the following Saturday when she was in obvious pain,
but the next day, she improved a great deal, and seemed to be out of
the woods the day after that.

But now she can't stand up by herself in the mornings. This started on
the Saturday when she was having that terrible day.

It doesn't seem that she's in pain now. When she had lyme disease, she
was in obvious pain. This seems to be a lack of strength. I've taken
her swimming a few times since then and after swimming she has no
problem getting in and out of the car or standing up. She moves just
fine.

Once she's up, she's fine. No problem squatting for either #1 or #2. No
problem with walking around. When I take her on long walks, she does
fine and comes back into the house like gangbusters. After an hour or
two, she has trouble getting up again.

It's August now. For most of the summer, I haven't been walking her as
much as I normally would because I was in a car accident and having
trouble walking myself, so she hasn't gotten her normal exercise, which
involved a lot of frisbee play. Before the chicken thing, she was
getting walks about every other day that involved a lot of running and
frisbee.

She has no problem with appetite or attitude, except she's obviously
frustrated by not being able to get up. Her range of expression is
unchanged.

I'll get paid in a few days and will be able to take her to the vet,
but will be grateful for any suggestions I can get.

Thanks,

Lee

Hello Webslinger,

If you get a reply from this well known net kook and troll, Jerry Howe
aka The Puppy Wizard who also uses different sock puppets to piss
everybody off,  killfile him and do not reply to him. All he does is
call people rude names by calling us dog abusers, liars and mental
cases, which we are not. He has nothing better to do except play
pocket pool with his hairy beanbag in front of his computer while
damaging the pets newsgroups with his insane postings and ranting and
raving.

Do not reply to him. All us newsgroup posters in the pets newsgroups
would appreciate that you don't.

Call the vet, see if you can make some kind of arrangement, and go see
him/her now!!

Hi Again -

Would be very happy not to reply to the nasty troll. I hope he gets
back on his meds soon, though. However, I'm using Google's beta
interface and am not sure how to avoid it. Any advice would be
appreciated.

Also, unfortunately, the vet is a 2 hours drive away and I don't even
have gas money. The one that's closer doesn't do arrangements. It was
worth trying, though. Thanks for the suggestion. It looks like it will
be a couple of days.

Any idea what this could be? I'm thinking that something may have
happened to her kidneys with the ingestion of garbage substances. There
doesn't appear to be inflamation from her hips. There appears to be no
pain. Just weakness.

Thanks,

Lee

Or could be that there is an age related orthopedic problem that
coincidentally became symptomatic at the same time that he had his
all-you-can-eat-garbage-buffet. Could be arthritis or a combination of
ACL-type injury with arthritis.

post date a check... that way they have the money, just have to hold on to
it for a little

But don't assume that every business will accept a post dated check. Many
don't because they've been shafted. We will only do it for well established
clients with no prior issues with unpaid bills.

Agreed.  We wont even accept cheques from new clients because of the number
of dishonoured ones we used to get.  So now its cash or credit card only for
new clients.  Its worthwhile building a relationship with your local vet as
once they know you and your pets they will usually be a lot more lenient
with paying for something a few days later then if they dont know you at
all.
