Nails weirdness

I have noticed something going on with Saskia's nails (Great Dane, 1 1/2
years old, spayed). I have worked with dogs and trimmed their nails for
groomers and rescues and vets all my life and have never seen anything quite
like it. Yes, we are going to the vet later in the week. What is happening
is, the nail seems to have a sort of seam in the bottom that has opened,
making the nail more semi-circular than tubular and revealing a slightly
soft core around the quick that is light in color. She shows absolutely no
sign of discomfort unless the slightly soft bit is pressed with a
fingernail, then she just tugs the foot slightly. I didn't notice it at
first I guess, even while trimming her nails, but a week or so ago I saw it
in the one nail that is slightly tilted and thus grows longer, and thought
it was something to do with that nail. But now I see that it is happening to
a lesser degree in most of her nails. What on earth could this be???

Thanks,
Katrina

I'd be curious to know what you find out.  I noticed this with Brandys nails
occasionally.  I rarely had to cut hers but once in a while I would and
there was always one that looks like you described.  I never worried with it
much since she never seems in discomfort and I never thought to ask the vet

Someone on the dogs health group has replied that all of his dog's nails are
always like this and he takes it to mean they're being kept short enough, an
din fact worries when they're NOT like this! So maybe I won't go to the vet
after all. I have to take the cat in anyway and I'll just ask him about
this, just to cover my a.s, but it sounds like I shouldn't be concerned,
then. I guess the reason I never saw it in all those years was because I'm
used to dealing with dogs whose nails people have neglected!
Thanks,
Katrina
