I have a cat with FIV (approx 8 years old) that seems to have developed
FIP, due to symptoms, analysis of fluid in the abdomen and blood
profile. The fluid accumulates within 3/4 days once drained (done twice
so far. Other symptoms are weight loss (14 to 10 lbs) and
lethargy/depression. He eats, but not enough, so I have to force-feed.
He uses the litter box, shows affection, etc. No vomiting.
Will prednisone help at all? 5 mg once a day. Will that help only with
quality of life. How would things be affected by the FIV?
Not looking for the final answer from anyone, but would appreciate any
feedback that can be given. Thanks!

FIP & FIV are not a good combination for your cat. :-(
Yes, prednisone *might* stimulate your cat's appetite, but FIP cannot be
cured. :-(
I am sorry to say things so bluntly, but FIP is a lethal disease. :-(

Thanks for your reply, but it didn't really answer my question.
Prednisone and interferone are said by some to slow the progression of
the disease. Is 5 mg only enough for quality of life (stimulate
appetite) and not enough to help otherwise. Will 5 mg or more be
dangerous because of the FIV?

I don't have personal experience with FIV.
I have personal sad experience with FIP. :-(
5mg prednisone should be enough to stimulate appetite, though there are
no guarantees. I have no idea how the prednisone will affect the FIV.
What is the interferone supposed to do? Neither FIP nor FIV can be
cured. :-(

My cat is on interferon - because she has a low white sell count. When the
specialist put her on it he sai they didn't know if it was an immune system
modulator or an anti-viral. Maybe it can't be cured but maybe with the
right combination it can be controlled. I believe it was/is used it people
with AIDS.
BTW, Interferon can be compounded in flavors that cats like. My cat loves
the tripple fish and she thinks her medication is a treat; that makes it a
lot less stressful to administer.

Interesting that you can get interferon as an oral mixture - we can only
get as subcutaneous injectable.

I meant in Denmark (or in all of Europe - my vet got it from Germany),
vets can only get interferon as subcutaneous injectable. My vet and I
have tried treating a cat with interferon for calicivirus with no effect.
