Hello,

My cat recently underwent radioactive iodine treatment for
hyperthyroidism. Prior to receiving this treatment, he was on tapazole
for an extended period of time. During this time his T4 levels were in
either the normal or below normal range. In fact, I'm afraid that for a
period of at least a month or two his T4 levels were too low. During
the entire period on tapazole, my cat's BUN and creatinine levels were
within the normal range. This was believed to indicate that, following
radioactive iodine treatment, we wouldn't discover that my cat's
hyperthyroidism was 'masking' an underlying kidney ailment.

However, sure enough, despite my cat's good indications while on
tapazole, he now has significantly elevated BUN and creatinine levels
following his radioactive iodine treatment. I'm beginning to wonder if
radioactive iodine is as safe as I thought.

Most of the people in this group are far more knowledgeable than me
about this stuff. If you have any commments, I'd like to hear them.

Thanks,

Steve

...........Despite tests which may indicate that the kidney function is OK,
I think what happens is that the HyperT can mask insufficient kidney
function and what you end up with is the appearance of suddenly damaged
kidneys.  Unfortunately I don't think that yours is a unique experience.
I'm not sure it has anything to do with the RAI treatment per se.  There's a
good feline HT list you can join - don't have the url at the moment but it
shouldn't be hard to find.

best of luck to you and your kitty
