my eleven year old German Shepherd Dog/mix has an abscessed tooth. The vet
says $300 to remove it, and he states that he is not certain if the tooth
is causing any pain, because , he says, dogs don't always show pain clearly.
I have noticed that the dog cannot bite hard on food. Anyone have any
comments about whether the price I was quoted is good, and/or if the
extraction will benefit the dog?Thanx. Mike.

........don't know about the price, but an abcess is an infection. I'd get
the tooth out of his head. Pain is only part of the issue.

Hope he/she is on antibiotics. Abscesses are of the fastest way to infect
the blood stream causing huge cardiac problems. For sure I would have it
pulled, pain is just one problem. Keep us posted.

several people have told me about the alleged connection between tooth
infection and heart infection. I was unaware that an abscess could cause
such trouble. We are going to have the dog's abscessed tooth removed in the
first week of December hopefully, and we're aware that there might be more
than one tooth needing removal. Will keep in touch. Mike.

We have a friend who lost his dog to this. He was also unaware. They found
him dead in the yard. The same happens with people so provide care for your
pet as soon as possible

It's because the bacteria from the mouth and abscess can easily get into the
blood stream and head straight for the heart causing problems with the heart
valves especially. I'd strongly recommend your dog be on antibiotics for at
least a week before the surgery and then after as well. Hope everything
works out!

Get it out.
As for price, considering it's a procedure that requires general anesthesia,
possibly IV fluids, monitoring during and post-op, pre-op blood work, the
procedure itself as well as antibiotics - I'd say you're lucky it's only
$300.

That means the dog GETS surgery WON way or the
other.
Your "pre op" blood work is a SCAM.
> the procedure itself as well as antibiotics -
Should cost $100.00 which is twice what it's WORTH.

INDEEDY... but you're a dog abusing malpracticioner.

Your vet is correct - dogs are very stoic, so it's possible that
your dog is in a great deal of pain. Probable, actually, given
your statement that your dog is not biting down on its food.
IMO, your choices are root canal or removal. In your situation,
I think that removal is the better option.

Which tooth? Some have deep roots, some not so much.
