Distemper series for kittens

I took two rescue kittens in yesterday to the vet for their second
distemper shot.  I was absolutely shocked when they told me that they
needed a series of *three* distemper shots.  I have had cats for
years, and it has *always* been *two*.  Did something change recently
in terms of the distemper shots/boosters for kittens?  I am really
confused.

Thanks for any clarification.

"If you bought a kitten at 14 weeks of age or older, and that kitten had
never received any vaccines, the kitten still needs a series of 2 distemper
shots.  The younger the kitten (less that 7 weeks of age), the more shots
he/she will receive.  The distemper shot is then boostered one year after
the last vaccine in your kittens distemper series.  After that, your
veterinarian will let you know if the distemper vaccine will be do yearly or
every 3 years thereafter."

Just read that on google. I also brought my 8 week old kitten in for his
distemper shots. He had one before I adopted him and then had a second and
third at my vet's.

You need to have at least two shots 3-4 weeks apart with the last one being
when the kitten is over 12 wks of age.  So if you start the series at less
than 8-9 wks of age, or do 8 wks then 11 wks, you'll get three shots.  Some
clinics just automatically do 3 no matter what the age, simply because it's
easier than trying to figure out who truly needs that last booster :-).
Nothing wrong with that either, although technically it may not always be
necessary.

Thanks, Dr. Deborah.  These kittens were dumped on my porch a couple
of months ago, and due to transportation difficulties got their first
distemper at about 12 weeks, then at 16 weeks.  So they probably do
not need the third one?  If it's necessary, I'll get it, but I've
already poured so much money into them (not to mention upcoming rabies
and neuter/spay), I'm about ready to give up on finding them a home
and just keep them!
