From news story that can be found at http://www.wnem.com/Global/story.asp?S=4369106

(TV5) -- Police are hot on the trail of the dog killer. Investigators say they believe
they know who is responsible for the shootings. They say the adult male suspect may have
killed at least three family dogs and he will likely face charges for the grief he's
caused.

Dogs have turned up missing in an Argentine Township (In Michigan) for a few months and
now three of them turned up dead in the same vicinity with similar wounds. Now police and
neighbors are wondering who killed their dogs and whether there may be more victims.

Missing pet posters started appearing all around town near Thanksgiving. Pictures of
Shelby, Barkley and Lexie even made their way to the Argentine Township Police Department.

The owners hoping their dogs simply lost their way home but the dogs never returned
instead all three Barkely, Lexie, and Shelby turned up shot to death in a swampy area near
a neighbor’s yard. Each suffered a high powered rifle bullet would to the head or shoulder
area. Shelby's owner says he found her with her paws tied together, helpless, not far from
where he lives on Seymour Road.

Wonder why the owners didn't keep their dogs at home? At least it sounds
like a quick death, and they didn't suffer. Where are the dog owners
accountability in all this?

While it would have been a wiser decision to keep their animals under close
supervision, there is no freaking way the pet owner should be _accountable_
for someone else's cruelty.

Sure blame the owners!!  The people that did it are not responsible.  That is the way
people seem to think today.  Nobody is responsible for their actions anymore!!!  That is
why the world is in the shape it is now-days!!!

I just asked. But unless that person stole the dogs out of the owners
yard, there IS some culpability on the part of the owners. What ever
happened to leash laws and keeping your dogs at home?
Dogs here are routinely shot for chasing wildlife/deer/calves/sheep etc.
If a dog runs loose, farmers shoot them. Then they report their loss to
the dog warden, who then tracks down the dog's owner if possible. And
fines the owner, both for having the dog running at large, and  for
damages.
I know I certainly keep my dogs at home, because I know if they ran at
large, they would certainly be shot by area farmers. If that happened, I
would be apologizing to them, as well as rubbing my wounds over the loss
of my dogs. I would have no one to blame but myself. If you love your
pet, you keep them home!
If these dogs were taken from their homes, and transported away and shot,
that's a whole nother ballgame! What you didn't offer was the whole story
or enough information. The part where the dog's legs were tied together
was certainly suspicious. But you only gave a part of the story! Poor
sensational reporting.

Most places around here in Michigan (Which is where the incident happened) have no leash
laws which I wish they did.  We have more dogs running loose around here then "Carters has
liver pills"!!!

IMHO, it can't be expressed more honestly, factually or any simpler than that.

Leash laws and maniacs aside, the world is just too dangerous to allow pets to roam
freely. There are probably some folks who consider this dog killer a genuine problem
solver.

Regardless of anything else, we have a responsibility to protect the animals in our care.
It baffles me that some folks put forth so much effort to protect inanimate objects, yet
allow their animals (and very often their own children) to run at large.

A dog's life is too short; their only fault really.

Yep, you can add politics, you can add all the excuses and dressings,
finger pointing and blame, expectations/fairy tales, but it all boils
down to accountability.
When it's all said and done, the safety of your beloved pet centers
around the person who loves them, protecting their well being.

If you find them disposable, then you find excuses to allow for lapses in
their well being, considering them tradeoffs and risk allowances.
If you love your pet, and find those risks unacceptable, then you keep
them home. It's just that simple.

In the same line of thought, we as pet owners/companions are
responsible for our pets whether we let them outside in our yard at
2am and they start barking or they get out the door or theyard. WE are
repsonsible for their wellbeing!

You are right. I live in the country, with no neighbors close, but barking
carries for miles. I make sure my neighbors, no matter how far, have their
peace and quiet broken by my dogs.
