He needs to go to the vet today to get that claw clipped back. It is
reasonably common for the dewclaw or any of the other nails for that matter
to grow right around and start to dig into the paw. It causes pain and
infection and yes the cat will spend more time licking it. They do not
always show lameness but will have a foul smell once infection sets in. Your
cats claw may not have got to that stage yet but I would get it clipped now
before it does. the vet will show you how to regularly cut that particular
nail back so that the same thing does not happen again.

Thank you so much for your response, and we will get the little guy into
the vets tonight, if at all possible..if we can find one open after 5:00
p.m. If not tonight, I will put him in his little cat carrying container
deal, and take him to the nearest vet open Tuesday morning. But thank
you also for answering my un-asked questions about his behavior. He is a
wonderful cat, and I don't want something like this to bring him down or
have him "put down", as in "put to sleep"..euthanasia. Thanks again!
