........what do the vet/s have to say about this situation? I think it
really depends on what they found when they operated as it's apparently
impossible to know exactly what was going on before opening up the dog.
While contemplating back surgery for a dog of mine a few months ago I found
a board on a dachsie site that said not to give up - motor function can
improve as far away as a year.

thanks for responding. the neuro doesn't seem overly concerned as she
is making tiny progress and as long as that's the case everything is
somewhat normal. i'm just worried about the pace of the recovery as
her muscles are atrophying quite badly now. the frustrating part is
that there are no real timeframes and the emotional ups and down are
crazy.

..........I'd get on the web and search out groups you can post to which are
keyed to back surgery recovery problems. I think swimming is usually
suggested for keeping muscle tone up. You can do physical therapy exercise
also. Anything to keep the muscles active. Can this dog eliminate by
herself?

yes she has full bladder and bowel control with pain sensation.
