Hi-

I have a 7 year old german shepherd that was diagnosed with type II
hansen IVD and due to the fact she had pain sensation and was still
able to walk albeit very ataxic, opted for surgery after reviewing the
myleogram.  ever since the surgery 6 weeks ago she has regained bowel
function but has no motor function in her hind legs.  sensation
function is decent.  her hind right leg somewhat moves when she is in
her sling/cart but left hind does nothing.  i am very concerned about
the loss of her motor function post surgery as she had it prior.  i
have her in profession physical therapy with acupuncture.  does anyone
have anything to share with me regarding recovery for these operations?

TIA

........what do the vet/s have to say about this situation? I think it
really depends on what they found when they operated as it's apparently
impossible to know exactly what was going on before opening up the dog.
While contemplating back surgery for a dog of mine a few months ago I found
a board on a dachsie site that said not to give up - motor function can
improve as far away as a year.

thanks for responding.  the neuro doesn't seem overly concerned as she
is making tiny progress and as long as that's the case everything is
somewhat normal.  i'm just worried about the pace of the recovery as
her muscles are atrophying quite badly now.  the frustrating part is
that there are no real timeframes and the emotional ups and down are
crazy.

..........I'd get on the web and search out groups you can post to which are
keyed to back surgery recovery problems.  I think swimming is usually
suggested for keeping muscle tone up.  You can do physical therapy exercise
also.  Anything to keep the muscles active.  Can this dog eliminate by
herself?
