Have an 11 year old cat that has a tumor on his hind leg that is now huge,
about 7" x 4" and he has just started to severely limp. He still has an
appetite and hobbles around like he is not sick at all. We believe he has
osteosarcoma and thought the disease would take over before his leg would
hinder him. What are your thoughts, it is hard to tell if he is in pain.
At what point would you recommend euthanasia? Should we wait until the
appetite is affected as long as he can limp around the house and make it to
the litter box?

This is a judgment call. My 17 year old cat had a fibrosarcoma on her hind
leg last year. The tumor was a fast growing one. I opted to euthanize her
before she lost her appetite. She was still getting around OK, but had lost
weight and was eating litter (due to anemia). I could see the writing on the
wall and did not want to wait until she was in pain or crisis. If the cat is
limping, I would opt to euthanize. This is just what I would do.....

Cats mask pain pretty well and by the time you notice it he will be in a lot
of pain. From the sounds of it if he is limping he is in pain. You can
either have the leg removed or put him to sleep but I wouldn't wait too long
to do either of them.
Even at 11 if his health is good there is no reason to believe that removing
the leg wouldn't give him many more years. Cats do remarkably well on 3
legs. I have an 8 year old who had a leg removed due to a giant cell tumor
at the age of five and she zooms around here right along with the rest of
the cats.
