Dog with glucose in urine

A couple of weeks ago I noticed that there was some blood in my dogs
urine.  The next day I brought a sample into our vet for testing...they
called me within a few hours to let me know that she had to come in
right away to see the vet and more than likely get some blood work
done.  When we went to our appointment the vet told me that there was
glucose in her urine and it was very likely that she was diabetic.
They did another urine test to be sure that there wasn't an error
with the first test before blood work was completed, and again there
were high amounts of glucose so the blood work was taken.  The next
morning, the vet called me to let me know that her blood work all came
back fine and her blood glucose level was normal so she isn't
diabetic.  She gave me a 3 week supply of antibiotics to treat the
infection (I guess UTI based on the blood in the urine) and told me
that this was really strange and that she would research it further.
She called again since this and said that we would wait and see how it
goes with the antibiotics, as she has seen in some circumstances that
stress in cats can cause glucose to be present in urine  - and was
hoping that this was the case with my dog.

It's been 2 weeks now.  I purchased the urinalysis sticks for some home
testing - and as of last night there is still a high amount of
glucose present.

Is it possible that she could have eaten a plant or something outside,
or something in her regular dog food that could be causing this?  The
vet suggests x-rays if the glucose is still present after she has
finished her medication - to check for stones.  She doesn't seem to
be in any discomfort and it eating and drinking the same as always.

Anyone have any ideas?

First off, I'd recommend having another blood sample done to verify that the
blood glucose is normal.  If it still shows normal glucose, you might want
to have a fructosamine level done.  That checks to see what your glucose has
been over the last 2 weeks.  If it's normal, then you know for sure that you
don't have diabetes.

If you truly have glucose in the urine with normal blood glucose, then
you've either got renal tubular disease (kidney disease), or Fanconi's (rare
syndrome mainly in Basenji's), or primary renal glucosuria (another rare
disease).  Your vet should be able to distinguish between these with
comprehensive bloodwork and urine analysis for protein, amino acids, etc.
I've never seen any kind of UTI alter the urine glucose results, and stones
certainly shouldn't do it!

Good luck

Thanks for the reply.

I've also checked her urine for ketones, and there aren't any.  The vet
said that everything in the bloodwork and urine was normal, except the
white blood cells were a little high...and they were even lower when
the second urine sample was taken.

She's a Choc Lab/Collie Cross - and only just over a year and a half
old.  How serious are the conditions that you mentioned?  The vet did
mention these, but said that the blood work results just wasn't there
to support it.
