Our 3 year old lab has a chronic skin problem. The hair is gone in a 5"
x 5" area on her neck below her chin. Vet has advised antibacterial
shampoo but has had little effect. Any clues as to what this may be?

........Have they done a skin scraping or fungal culture?  Possibilities are
fungal, mites, Staph.  Is it weeping?  Does she scratch it?

Yes, the local vet tried all those things but nothing was coming up
positive. She (my lab) also had a skin allergy resembling acne all over
her stomach, arm pits, lower abdomen that we finally isolated to the
brand of dog food we were buying. She's all clear now except for the
under side of the neck so we think something else is causing this. The
vet also suggested that this might be due to the way the skin folds
back on itself. Anyways its flaky and dry and hairless resembling some
type of dermatitus. Thanks for your response.

..............Does she wear a collar all the time?  Does it have any
pesticides in it?  Does she swim a lot?

Yes, she wears a leather collar all the time. I keep it fairly loose,
but always wondered if some bacteria was being harbored in the leather.
No swimming, mostly a home dog.

Can you leave the collar off until you need it for going out?  And possibly
switch off to a webbing collar?

Yes, leather can build populations of both bacteria and fungi.
