My big guy he's 7 yr old lab he's been on prednisone for nearly a year
he was diagnosed with having autoimmune disease. Since he's been on
this his stomach is very swollen he's haivng a hard time breath. I have
noticed that when we are walking he will stop lay down then get back up
his right front leg will start shaking badly, I've told my vet about it
they didn't seem to concerned with it. I'm very concerned.

He was taking 20 mil of pred then cut back to 5 mil due to the fact it
caused to have ulcers. I want to slowly take him off of it.Will he have
any side effects of me doing this. My big guy is suffering cause of
this. Will this help his stoamch to go down? He's having an hard enough
time breathing as it is.I told my vet this , they cut it back to 2mil .
His stomach is very disteneded as it is.

With me slowly taking him off of this will it help him to breath better
as well" Will his stomach go down too?

Thank You

Did your vet draw any fluid out?

If his stomach is swollen and hard I would get him to an emergency vet.
When Barney started bleeding internally from the cancer this is what
happened.

If he has fluid in the abdomen it could be from organ failure secondary to
heart failure. The fluid would push up on the chest cavity making it hard to
breath. More than likely, the distended abdomen is from the cortizone which
weakens the muscles. causes resp problems, etc. He should be weened off the
pred.

...........wondering about induced adrenal gland ptoblems from the pred
also.....

........to the OP - if your dog goes down and can't get up, head for the
emergency vet.

Has your Vet ruled out Intestinal Lymphangiectasia? I lost a little Yorkie a
few years ago with the same symptoms. The only treatment at the time was
Prednisone and a diet of NO fat at all. She lived on nothing but boiled
chicken breasts and brown rice. Just a small amount of fat would cause her
belly to swell up to where she could hardly walk. When the fluid in her
abdomen built up to where it made it hard to breathe the Vet would tap her
belly and drain off about a quart of lymph fluid. It is a terrible disease.
Good luck to you.
