eaten staple?

Cali (mini poodle) was spayed on Wednesday.  One of her staples looked loose
today and the vet said it would be ok if it fell out.  I had a feeling that
I should have pulled it but I didn't.  Earlier this evening, I noticed she
was licking the area.  I looked at it closely and noticed one of the staples
is missing.  I don't know if it fell out or if she ate it.  I called the ER
vet and they said to feed her bread and watch her for a few days.  If she
has loose stool or no stool and seems lethargic I should bring her in.  I am
worried (yeah, what else is new) and I plan to call the real vet tomorrow to
let them know what might have happened so they have it in their records.
What I am wondering if this.....if she did swallow it, what are the chances
that there will be a problem?  100% or not definite.  Would an x-ray show
the staple?  Would that be overkill?  Any advice welcome.

I don't think I'd be too worried about it.  Surgical staples are pretty
small, and odds are the sharp edges are bent over.  An xray would definitely
show it, so if you're worried, that's the way to go.  If it's not there, no
biggie.  If it is there, I'd probably still just monitor.  You never know
what might happen, but I'd bet it'd pass no problem.

thanks for the info.  I guess I will just keep an eye on her for now (no
xray).
