"idiopathic nasal discharge"
Our two year old spayed shepherd "bell" has been bleeding from one nostril
accompanied with a clear to sometimes whitish discharge.
This has been going on for six months on and off but is now continuous and
three different vets cannot give a precise diagnosis.
She has had three types of antibiotics', x-rayed three times, otoscoped and
entoscoped as well with no result and now they want to do an m r i or c t
scan
at a cost of $1000.00 plus.
They claim that there is no aspigiliosos or any infection nor can they see
any foreign body in her nose.
Can any one offer any insight?
Thanks
Sorry Bell's having these issues. I know it can be very frustrating to
not find a diagnosis, even though you've done all you have so far.
Personally, I wouldn't call the problem "idiopathic" until the MRI or CT
scan is done and shows there's truly nothing wrong. It's very likely one
of those tests will show something...what, I don't know, but a foreign
body seems high on my list in a young, active dog. Usually this would be
seen with a scoping, but not always. If the scan is unremarkable, then
there are some immune-mediated problems which can cause these types of
signs and may be responsive to steroids. My recommendation is to have
the MRI or CT (MRI would be my vote) and then you can truly say you've
done all you can to find the problem. If nothing's found, ask your
veterinarian if a steroid trial is worthwhile.
Good luck and please keep us updated.

Hello Sandy
Many thanks for the solid advice. The M.R.I was done today at 6pm and they
promised results tomorrow afternoon so I will post the results.
I should mention that "belle" has many strange problems since getting a
proheart sr12 shot in march of 2005
Thanks again Gordon

Hello, We have gone ahead with the m.r.i and the results are no cancer or
tumour thank god, but no definitive answer to her problems other than
a statement that it :"may:" be chronic rhinitis but they will repeat all the
tests and do an immune assay as well. The say the results show clearly that
there is no turbinate damage. Will keep all informed.
