The kitten I posted about several days ago went for a new blood test
today and her BUN and CREATININE (sp?) levels are fine, but her
POTASSIUM is still too high. The vet is going to check it again
tomorrow. In the meantime, I'm in a panic. What could be the problem?
He said if her kidneys are fine, it would be a different thing causing
the potassium to be high. What are some of the other things that would
cause it? What about .5 mls of CLAVAMOX twice a day (she's slightly
under 3 lbs.) Would that cause it? Would an infection somewhere in her
body cause it? Her temp was normal so I'm guessing she doesn't have an
infection anywhere, but the CLAVAMOX was prescribed by her emergency vet
when she discharged the kitten on Sunday morning, it was for her kidneys
she said. It's so hard to reach a vet on the phone, they are
understandably busy. How serious is an elevated potassium level in a 3
month old kitten?

Can't help you too much with what causes elevated potassium, just wondering,
did you let the vet know that she's on Clavamox? Even if it should be on
their file, its important to remind them when you're actually speaking with
them. Sometimes things can get a little hectic, and points can be missed.

Haven't gone through the whole thing, but this link may be helpful (or
not)...

Thanks, that was helpful. The kitten got adopted on Wednesday but I am
in close contact with her new "owner". He is fully aware of what she's
been through and that he needs to get her potassium level checked
again. I wish I could have kept her longer so I could have seen her
through this, but I was only her foster mom and I have no say in when
they leave me. Today (Sunday) the adopter said she was active, playing
a lot, eating, and drinking, so this all sounds very hopeful to me.

Good to hear she got a home. Its got to be pretty frustrating for you
though, not being able to see this thing through. If you hear how she does,
let us know.
