Our diabetic dog normally has Insuvet Lente but on two occasions in the last
three months the vet has been unable to obtain this insulin and has provided
prescriptions for Hypurin Bovine Lente. We have managed to obtain Hypurin
Bovine Lente from supermarket pharmacies (with difficulty since few have any
stock)but the pharmacists have told us that it is no longer being produced
and once existing stocks are gone then that's it. Does anyone know what is
happening here, why there are these supply problems with animal/human Lente
insulin in the UK? I have e-mailed Schering-Plough, who manufacture Insuvet
Lente, but they don't reply.

Thanks for those links. The first link is American (I am in the United
Kingdom), and the other two links don't seem to refer to the issue that I
wrote about in my post.

All human lente and ultralente insulin has been discontinued in the U.S. I
would suspect the same has occurred in the UK. I don't know why Schering
Plough might not be producing their insulin -- they don't market it in the
U.S. Maybe you should check with your vet about switching to Caninsulin by
Intervet -- as it's used fairly regularly in the U.S. it might be less
likely to have manufacturing issues. It seems to be available in the UK.

Thanks for that information. Hopefully the situation will be resolved soon
when all remaining stocks of Lente have been used. He is on 19 units twice a
day therefore a 10ml vial only lasts about 3 weeks to 4 weeks. The
uncertainty each month of not knowing whether or not we will run out is just
too stressful.
