toxic to cats?

Hi,

I just got a new "rolling chair" on small wheels for my home office.
The wheels seem to have been lubricated at the factory so that the
chair will move easier. There's only residual lubricant/oil on the
wheels, but I was wondering: if my cat is exposed to even such a tiny
amount, can it be poisonous?

Thanks.

Not very likely.  Most lubricant oils are high viscosity hydrocarbons
which will only lubricate the esophagus if swallowed, much like
mineral oil.  The hydrocarbons to worry about are the volatile ones,
such as kerosene, for example, which can burn the lungs when vapours
are inhaled, or can burn the esophagus.  Of course, always watch out
for antifreeze (ethylene glycol) which is highly attractive to cats,
but highly unlikely to be in the lubricant on your wheels.
