Sick cat question

My brother and family was supposed to visit for the weekend, but had to
cancel when one of their cats (Clyde) got sick.  From what I know, Clyde's
always had a somewhat sensitive stomach.  And since he's overly nosey, he's
also the one likely to get into stuff he shouldn't, and therefore suffer the
consequences.

My SIL thinks that it all started on Wednesday, when he started having
liquid poop and vomiting.  Clyde is apparently in the habit of "romancing"
the house plants, and eating them when they don't return his affections.
None of the house plants are toxic or otherwise bad for the animals, but I
guess his sensitive stomach created the problem when he ate some sort of a
succulent.

Yesterday, her mom called to tell her that he vomitted again, and this time
it was kind of pink, and she rushed him to the vet.  Vet said he must've
been sicker for a day or so longer than they thought, was dehydrated, and
his WBC count was really low.   Also said his bladder was really full, the
urine very yellow and concentrated, and he must not have peed in some time.
Started him on IV fluids and antibiotics, and tested for leukemia, which
came back negative.  X-Rays showed no blockages or anything else unusual.
They kept him overnight for observation/hydration/meds.  He was feeling a
little better today, but couldn't keep down his food, and last I know
(around 6:30 tonight), he is vomiting again and has liquid brown stuff
coming out his butt, which has blood.  He is now on Tagamet and Centrine
(?).

Any ideas on what is wrong and whether they should be doing other tests or
giving different meds?

My first thought: Had he been eating the tainted cat food?
