I have a 7 year old Beagle mix. He's very recently been diagnosed
with the 3rd degree heart block. There also is a liver problem,
possibly caused by this heart problem. He hasn't seen a cardiologist,
yet. But, his regular vet says he needs a pacemaker. Of course, we're
very worried. I'm also wondering what causes this problem.
I'd appreciate any thoughts and suggestions on what to do.
Thanks.

Get a thyoid test done!

1. Atropine is usually not effective.
2. I.V. isoproterenol may increase the ventricular rate.
3. Pacemaker therapy is usually the only effective therapy.
4. Evaluation and treatment for hypothyroidism may be rewarding.
This could be caused by hyperthyroidism.
--------------
Either they made a mistake here or both hypo- and hyper- thyroidism can
cause 3rd degree heart block. And I can't seem to nail it down either,
except hypothyroidism causes a very slow heart rate. What did the
bloodwork show??? What's going on with the liver - what are the blood
values? Does your dog have a distended abdomen?
