In  the past, I've used Frontline to control fleas on my small
short-haired dog.  This weekend, my wife purchased a new product
called Triforce.  Can anyone tell me if it is as effective (and as
safe) as Frontline?

What's the active ingredient?  I've never heard of it....

Oh, bad bad bad stuff ;-).

That's the stuff that I've seen three dogs with bad reactions to in the last
2 weeks.  Didn't recognize the trade name but those are the same
ingredients.  I actually had never heard of cyphenothrin, but presumably
it's a "newer" permethrin type pesticide.  Very toxic to cats, and from my
recent experience pretty nasty to dogs as well.

Stick with frontline.

Deborah,
Thank you very much.  I'm glad I asked here.  I'll take back TriForce
tomorrow and get Frontline.

I know we are so fortunate to have Deborah and her postings. I really value
them. Thanks.

My wife purchased TriForce from a locally-operated "Feed, Garden & Pet
Supply" store because it was about 1/3 less expensive than Frontline.
When I returned the product this morning, the manager seemed alarmed
to hear the report of problems caused by it.  After all, it can't be
good for business if your customers' pets are harmed by something you
sold them.

What problems did you have with it?

I didn't have any problems because I didn't even open the package.
But Deborah reported (in this thread) that she saw "three dogs with
bad reactions to in the last 2 weeks" and I shared that information
with the manager.  Sure, it's possible that my dog would not have a
bad reaction, but I decided it's not worth the risk to save $10 over
three months.

So the problem was that you heard a rumor.

I take a little bit of exception to having my statements be called a rumor
;-).  I'm the first one to tell people not to believe everything they read
on the internet, but I think I've posted here enough that by now anyone who
reads this newsgroup with any regularity knows that I'm not likely to make
blanket statements without fairly strong support for my position.  (and to
know that I like long, runon sentences LOL)

I do have significant concerns about this product, because I had never heard
of it until I had a dog come in who had lost almost all of his hair down his
entire back and had what looked like chemical burns within 2 days of having
it applied (maybe not the identical product, but something with those same
ingredients).  Then within a 2 week period I had another dog come in with
signs of permethrin toxicity after using that product, then one more dog
with a nasty skin issue.  None of which are ever issues with Frontline.

The plural of anecdote is not data.

I came here looking for confirmation of safety and efficacy for a
product that I had never heard of.  Anecdotal data to the contrary was
good enough for me to bypass this product in favor of one that I have
two years good experience with.

......amen.  Best to stay away from new products anyway, as they're field
testing them for at least a year.  BTW, John is our resident
curmudgeon......;-)
