My wife successfully castrated our goat with an elastic band
castration tool she bought from the local farm store. It was really
simple.
Now I want to say that we aren't considering trying this on a cat or
dog, for one thing the elastics that came with it seem like they would
be way too big - especially for a cat - it was designed for goats.
But I was wondering why dogs and cats aren't neutered this way? Do
they bite off the elastic? Goats don't have top teeth... Still, the
elastic on the goat seemed like it would be difficult to bite off even
with top and bottom teeth.
Anyway, it would be interesting to know why this isn't done.
Thanks.

1. It's cruel.
2. Cats and dogs have paws and claws, not hooves. They'd likely rip away at
that band with claws and teeth until they caused serious injury to
themselves and/or bleed to death.
3. It's cruel.

Because it only works reliably on animals with a certain conformation.
Look at the goat's scrotum and compare it with that of a dog or cat.
Might work ok on humans, though, if you could keep the hands away.
