My old Border Collie has arthritis and difficulty getting up, jumping etc.
Vet has suggested aspirin and says she will give me the dosage but we always
forget when we are in the office. He weighs about 110 and I've been using
the 81 mg low dose aspirin at once daily. What is a safe dose for this pup?
I scanned the newsgroup but didn't see a helpful post. Sorry but it's my
first post in this group and I thank you for any imput. I already use a ramp
to get him in the car.

The problem with aspirin is it can cause gastrointestinal upset.  I would
ask the vet for something like Rimadyl.  I have a 15 yr. old on it--75
mg./day-- and it has greatly improved her mobility.  I know people will
express concern over side effects but in senior dogs, I think the benefits
out weigh any risks.

OK..........Lets get something straight here ALL pain relievers regardless
of if they are aspirin or prescription medication have the potential to
cause gastrointestinal upset and the potential for internal bleeding.   One
is not necessarily safer than the other but in older dogs you have to weigh
the good they do verses the quality of life without them.

Any time you give a dog these types of medication you need to be aware of
ALL the side effects and what to watch out for, ie......going off food,
vomiting, bloody stools, pale gums all of which can indicate internal
bleeding and need immediate attention.

For most dogs 1 regular 325 mg aspirin daily is ok for dogs to take.  I for
one would not do this without first calling your vet to confirm the correct
dosage also to make sure there isn't anything going on that aspirin could
cause a problem with.  Like I said talk to your vet.

........just call them up.  You're a client and they've already seen your
dog.  No reason they shouldn't tell you.

......there's lots of supplements you can use to enhance the quality of your
dog's life WRT arthritis, such as glucosamine, EFAs (essential fatty acids)
+ Vit E,  and MSM for example.  One of my dogs only gets aspirin when she
overdoes it, which is rarely.  Otherwise she does well on the above
supplements.

......for ideas of dosages and the variety of supplements available see
under arthritis at www.dogaware.com

110? Pounds?

From http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/bordercollie.htm:

Weight: Dogs 30-45 pounds (14-20 kg.) Bitches 27-42 pounds (12-19 kg.)

If your dog is drastically overweight, it might be advisable to
consult your vet re proper diet in addition to seeking arthritis
remedies i.e. aspirin.
